Groningen neighbourhoods: Centrum, Meerstad and the wider municipality
Compare eight Groningen wijken with CBS 2024 data, including Meerstad and Haren-West. Read household and rental-stock differences without confusing the municipality with the city centre.

Registered residents
Reference year: 2024 · Geography: wijk
Registered residents on 1 January 2024; CBS rounds wijk counts to multiples of five.
A Centrum
24,920 people

Counts and shares answer different questions. Distances are area averages, not travel times from a particular address.
Missing or suppressed values are shown as “Not available”; they are never treated as zero.

A Groningen search can include much more than the area around the city centre. The municipality in this dataset also includes places such as Haren. Check the address and statistical boundary before interpreting a city-wide figure as a description of a particular neighbourhood.
This comparison covers eight selected wijken: Centrum, Meerstad e.o., Oud-Zuid, Oosterparkwijk, Helpman e.o., Hoogkerk e.o., Nieuw-West and Haren-West e.o. In the official names, e.o. means “en omgeving”, or “and surrounding area”. Haren-West e.o. is therefore one named statistical district, not a figure for all of Haren.
Centrum and Meerstad show why a city average is not enough
One-person households account for 81% in Centrum and 10% in Meerstad e.o. Households with children account for 4% and 64%, respectively. The share of residents younger than 15 is 3% in Centrum and 32% in Meerstad e.o.
The first two measures describe households; the age measure describes residents. They should not be added together. They also do not identify which homes are offered to students, how many bedrooms a rental has, or whether a school has space.
For a move with children, follow up with the actual school, childcare and daily routes. For a solo move, examine the particular rental’s space and costs. A large one-person-household share is not evidence that a suitable room is available now.
The rental-stock contrast is substantial, but it is not an availability forecast
Rental housing makes up 85% of Centrum’s stock and 8% of Meerstad e.o.’s. The figure for Haren-West e.o. is 30%. These are shares of the housing stock on the reference date, including housing corporations and other landlords.
The figures cannot tell you the current rent, the number of vacant homes or how likely an application is to succeed. Compare actual offers and eligibility conditions before changing your budget or search boundaries.
Haren-West e.o. also records 41% one-person households and 31% households with children. That is a different household mix from both Centrum and Meerstad e.o.; treating every address outside the centre as the same kind of place would lose useful detail.
Longer average distances need an address-level check
Centrum records 0.3 km to a large supermarket and 0.4 km to a GP practice. Meerstad e.o. records 1.4 km and 2.0 km. Haren-West e.o. records 1.0 km and 0.9 km.
These are averages across residents, calculated over roads available to cars. They are not journey times, and a cycle path can give you a different route. The supermarket category starts at 150 square metres. A nearby GP practice may also be unable to accept new registrations.
Test your own routine from the proposed address: groceries, work or study, healthcare and visits you make often. If an advert uses only “Groningen”, ask for the precise location before treating it as a central-city listing.
Compare running costs and the actual home
After checking location, use the costs-beyond-rent guide to compare bills, charges and insurance alongside the basic rent. None of the area indicators here measures a home’s energy use or monthly transport costs.
At a viewing, check the energy label, ventilation, noise and the condition of the rooms. Household patterns and rental shares cannot establish the comfort of an individual flat or the standard of its maintenance.
Source, boundaries and rounding
All eight selections are at CBS wijk level within the 2024 municipality Groningen, code GM0014. The sample includes parts of the wider municipality and does not cover every district. Keep the official boundary in mind when a name contains “e.o.” or a rental advert uses a broader place name.
The data come from CBS / PDOK Wijk- en Buurtkaart 2024, retrieved on 27 September 2026. Population, household and housing-ownership figures refer to 1 January 2024; the facility indicators use the 2024 reporting year. Wijk population counts are randomly rounded to multiples of five, shares are whole percentages and distances are rounded to 0.1 km. Missing or suppressed values are not zero. The abroad-born share is approximate because it adds two rounded source percentages; it does not describe nationality, jobs or language skills.
