Registered residents

Reference year: 2024 · Geography: gemeente

Registered residents on 1 January 2024, taken directly from the municipality record. The CBS random rounding to multiples of five applies to wijk and buurt counts, not this municipality total. Residents without a known subarea can be included in the municipality total, so adding district counts need not give the same result.

A Amsterdam

931,298 people

B Rotterdam

670,610 people

A · Amsterdam 931,298 people

B · Rotterdam 670,610 people

Common scale: 0 — 931,298 people

Counts and shares answer different questions. Distances are area averages, not travel times from a particular address.

Missing or suppressed values are shown as “Not available”; they are never treated as zero.

A move becomes easier to plan when you separate two decisions: which city fits your work and household, and which address will make daily life practical. The comparison above starts with six municipalities. The city guides then take a closer look at their local wijken.

We cover Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht, Eindhoven and Groningen. This is an editorial selection, not a ranking of rental markets or a complete list of places to live. The figures describe residents, households, housing stock and access to two everyday services. Current asking rents and available homes need a separate search.

Similar population totals can hide different household patterns

CBS’s 2024 municipality figures put Eindhoven at 246,417 registered residents and Groningen at 243,768. Their populations are close, but their household profiles differ: one-person households account for 50% in Eindhoven and 61% in Groningen, while households with children account for 26% and 18%.

This gives you something concrete to investigate without deciding which city is better. A high one-person-household share does not identify students, available studios or a particular social scene. A household with children is not a count of children, and the children need not all be school-age.

Housing stock also varies. The rental share is 65% in Rotterdam and 58% in Den Haag in this source. These figures include different kinds of landlords; they do not show vacancies, application success or what a new tenant would pay.

Compare municipalities with municipalities

A gemeente is a municipality, a wijk is a subdivision within it, and a buurt is a smaller area. The hub uses official municipality totals directly; it does not derive them by averaging the wijken in a city guide.

Municipal boundaries do not necessarily follow the built-up centre. Groningen’s local selection includes Haren-West e.o.; Rotterdam’s municipality reaches into port areas far to the west. Comparing the same administrative level is necessary, but it does not make the areas equally sized or internally uniform.

Population counts describe scale. Shares describe composition. Facility distances describe a population average. Keep those questions separate, and do not compare a municipality’s percentage with one small neighbourhood as if they were equivalent places.

Follow the city guide when a city makes your shortlist

The Amsterdam guide covers all 110 land wijken in the 2024 CBS municipality, including the Weesp areas. Search by official name or open the complete directory below its article. The article uses Jordaan and IJburg-West as examples. The Utrecht guide looks at Binnenstad, Leidsche Rijn and other selected wijken to show how household structure and rental stock can vary together.

In Rotterdam, area size itself is part of interpreting the figures. The Den Haag guide shows why a short supermarket distance does not imply equally close access to a GP.

The Eindhoven guide connects household comparisons with errands and healthcare routes. The Groningen guide makes the distinction between the centre and the wider municipality especially visible. These five guides outside Amsterdam each cover eight selected wijken, not a statistically representative sample or complete city directory. Amsterdam’s full coverage is at wijk level; it is not a separate entry for every smaller buurt or informal neighbourhood name.

Distance is useful only if you know what was measured

The supermarket and GP measures are population-average road distances. CBS’s method uses paved roads available to cars, including ferries; it is not a walking or cycling route planner and does not reproduce all traffic restrictions.

A city average of 0.6 km does not mean the next home you view will be that distance from a service. Nor does a nearby GP mean the practice accepts new patients. Once an address matters to you, check its actual route, opening hours and registration conditions. School and childcare availability also need direct checks; this comparison does not provide a school-distance metric.

Birthplace is descriptive data, not a housing recommendation

The foreign-born measure adds two rounded CBS percentages for registered residents born outside the Netherlands. It concerns the person’s own birthplace, not the broader origin classification that can also use parents’ birthplaces for Dutch-born residents.

It does not measure race, citizenship, work permits, recent arrivals, English proficiency or the number of expatriate employees. Do not use it as a proxy for safety or to decide where a particular person should live. If you need English-language services, ask the provider rather than infer them from population figures.

Put the shortlist through your own daily routine

Start with the places you must reach and the housing budget you can sustain. Test actual journeys at the times you expect to travel. Then check current listings against eligibility conditions, basic rent and costs beyond rent.

At a viewing, inspect the building as well as the surroundings. An energy label, ventilation, shading and heating arrangements tell you things that city statistics cannot. If you can relocate between regions, the Dutch climate comparison adds a seasonal perspective using a different, clearly stated historical period.

Source years and precision

The city and wijk comparisons use CBS / PDOK Wijk- en Buurtkaart 2024. Population and household figures refer to 1 January 2024; each indicator carries its own period in the comparison. The date this page was reviewed does not turn those figures into today’s population or rental supply.

Municipality population totals come directly from the municipality records. Wijk population counts are rounded to multiples of five, shares to whole percentages and facility distances to 0.1 km. Missing or suppressed data is not zero. Small apparent gaps, especially between rounded distances, should not decide a rental choice.

Read the CBS 2024 dataset definitions and wijk and buurt map documentation for the source scope. Use the figures to make a more focused shortlist, then verify what the actual home and local services offer.
